The Long View

I often use our Echo-X pedal set to high feedback positions on the knob. Not howling, out-of-control feedback, but a constant level - not dying away, but not building up and up, and with a longish delay time.

Then, using the ‘send’ function, I’ll flash it in for an instant on a quick chord to set it off repeating….

Why does a long dubby echo over a rhythm track sound so great, gently developing, subtly changing as the seconds tick by?

Is this also to do with how satisfying long modulation cycles are on a phaser or our Flanger-X pedal, going on and on?

A band, jamming away, maybe channeling a James Brown feel, playing a mid-tempo pattern one or two bars long can do this for much, much longer if they can hear a slow-cycle gentle oscillation at the same time. It’s like we can carry on with that repeating guitar part if we have the overall perspective of a slow repeating thing over the top - giving a direction, showing where we’re going…

Of course there are plenty of other reasons - tonally, texturally, rhythmically, and often bringing our own associations with them.

But take it away and we’ve only got the close-up bar-by-bar view.

That’s it. That’s the post.
